What Is Food Noise?

Food noise refers to heightened or persistent manifestations of food, often leading to intrusive thoughts about food and maladaptive eating behaviors. For some people food noise can be relentless, and can dominate their day-to-day life.

While food noise might be a newer term, its roots lie in a well-researched phenomenon: food cue reactivity. This is the brain's response to external (e.g., food advertisements) or internal (e.g., hunger signals) cues, triggering cravings and food-seeking behaviors. While adaptive in evolutionary terms, this reactivity becomes problematic in modern environments teeming with high-calorie temptations.
